1 Purchasing1.1 Why purchase a Japanese domestic? There are many reasons to purchase a Japanese domestic, the main reason being that you are going to receive a vehicle that will be in better condition for less cost than something you would purchase locally. The main reason for this are the strict inspection standards that Japanese vehicles must meet every two years after they turn three years old. Some of the things included in these inspections are emissions and safety standards. This test is referred to as "Shaken" and is described here. Another reason to purchase a Japanese domestic would be to purchase one of the many vehicles that were only offered in Japan. 1.2 What is included in vehicle price? Vehicle price includes all costs involved in getting vehicles to Canada, including vehicle cost, FOB charges, customs clearance, import taxes, as well as our fee. All vehicles shipped to Canada arrive in Vancouver, BC. If you require your vehicle in another city we can arrange to have it moved. The cost of extra inland shipping is minimal. To give you an idea, shipping cost from Vancouver to Calgary is approximately 300. You are also free to pick-up in Vancouver or arrange shipping on your own. 1.3 How can I minimize the risks of importing? Like any used vehicle purchase, there are some risks involved in purchasing a vehicle from overseas. A good way to help minimize this risk is to review the inspection sheet prior to purchase and make sure that you are aware of vehicle condition. It is also important to note that some vehicles may require repairs prior to passing the out-of-province inspection. It is not uncommon for vehicles to arrive needing some type of minor repair and it would be good to factor this into your cost of purchasing. Keep in mind that all vehicles purchased by Frontline Imports have been mechanically inspected prior to purchase, and that this inspection does tend to catch more serious problems. Shipping damage may also occur, but is extremely rare. All vehicles shipped are insured in the event of total loss. 1.4 What is your hold return policy? Holds are non-refundable, but may be transferred to another vehicle. This must be done prior to the confirmation of shipping arrangements. 1.5 When is final payment due? All outstanding balances must be cleared prior to arrival of vehicle in Canada. At this point, vehicles with outstanding balances will be re-listed and holds will be forfeit. At this point we do not offer financing. We have however been involved in setting up financing arrangements in the past and are aware of some of the complications that may arise in trying to purchase a vehicle from overseas with the use of financing. If you have any questions in regards to this, please contact us. 2 Shipping2.1 How long will I have to wait to receive my new car? On average, it takes one to two months from the time of purchase for vehicles to arrive in Canada. 2.2 How will my vehicle be shipped? All vehicles shipped by Frontline Imports are shipped by the container method. Shipping by container helps to avoid the many problems associated with deck shipping (RoRo) including body damage, corrosion, fading paint, and unreliable ETA’s. All vehicles are insured for total loss. 3 Legal3.1 Can right-hand-drive vehicles be driven in Canada? Right-hand-drive vehicles are completely legal in Canada, as long as they are at least 15 years old. This 15-year exemption allows vehicles to bypass the federal inspection that is usually required. Newer vehicles that undergo this inspection must be converted to left-hand-drive. It should be noted that vehicles imported from Japan must still undergo the mandatory out-of-province safety inspection before they can be registered in Canada. Transport Canada's explanation on the subject can be found here. 3.2 What will be required to register my new vehicle in Canada? Every province requires an out-of-province inspection prior to registration of your vehicle. This is the same inspection that is required for vehicles moving from province to province. Please check with your province for registration and insurance requirements prior to purchase. Any vehicle purchased from Frontline Import’s stock comes cleared from customs, and will be ready for the provincial inspection in your province of choice. Frontline Imports stock already located in Calgary is Alberta registered and out-of-province inspection passed. 4 Other4.1 Is driving a right-hand-drive vehicle hard? There is no difference in vehicle setup between a right-hand and left-hand drive vehicle. The pedals are the same, and so is the layout of the gearbox. Some people do find it a little difficult to shift using their left hand, however it seems to be no different than learning to shift with your right hand. Most people find that this comes quite easily, and have no problems picking up left hand shifting.
